MC-4A Interceptor Rehabilitation

The Cities of Mansfield, Arlington, and Grand Prairie, Texas face the need to expand infrastructure to accommodate their vastly growing populations. They have come to the realization that existing sanitary sewer interceptors are not sized appropriately to accommodate peak flow rates, and in some situations, average daily flows. This particular problem plagues many of the cities in the United States. In an effort to accommodate the need for increased sanitary sewer treatment capacity, the Trinity River Authority of Texas released for bid the MC-4A Interceptor Rehabilitation Project.

The primary function of the rehabilitation project was to reduce flow through the existing MC-4B wastewater interceptor, which serves as a conduit to the Trinity River Authority's Central Water Reclamation Facility. To accomplish this goal, OSCAR RENDA CONTRACTING (ORC) constructed the project in three phases. Phase One consisted of 8,300 feet of 54-inch diameter gravity sewer constructed of HOBAS pipe. The 54-inch HOBAS pipe, which is a centrifugally-cast, fiberglass-reinforced mortar pipe, was installed in depths over 40 feet. Approximately 700 feet of 72-inch tunnel was constructed to allow the 54-inch pipeline to cross a variety of roads and parks.

Phase Two was comprised of sanitary sewer force mains. Approximately 30,000 feet of double- and triple-barrel, 24-inch and 30-inch HOBAS pipeline was constructed. More than 2,000 feet of the 30,000 feet of pipelines were restrained using a thrust-restraint system, specifically designed by HOBAS for this project. Phase Three was the construction of a sanitary sewer lift station that was built at a depth of 60 feet. Constructed with the lift station were two valve vaults housing check valves, plug valves, and air-release valves for the force mains.
